History

Steven Neff, himself a former inmate, became very bored while he was serving his sentance in Fort Madison Corrections Facility. The only book allowed to him was a Bible and he read that cover-to-cover three times.

After his release and during his first semesters as a drug and addiction counseling student, Steve decided that he wanted to help other inmates. Steve felt that books would do a good job of not only entertaining inmates, but also help them prepare for the emotional and social rehabilitation needed to make a successfull re-entry into society and ensure that they had the confidence and knowledge available to them in order to become good citizens.

First Deliveries

Books for Crooks made its first deliveries on February 22nd, 2005 to Lee and Washington counties (both former residences) and word of the services began to spread. Steve collected cheap books from garage sales and free books from giveaway bins. Soon, Steve had been contacted by several other correctional facilties requesting books for their inmates. Local people had heard of Books for Crooks and wanted to help out by donating their old books.

Today, Books for Crooks serves numerous prisons and has made dozens of deliveries to regional correctional facilities (including Ft. Madison, Anamosa and Oakdale) in over 50 counties. We have 3 dozen books on hold for Mitchelville Women's Center. Please see the Wishlist for a list of books they would like!
