Welcome!
Books for Crooks was founded in 2005 by Steven Neff. The organization collects donated books and distributes them to prisons throughout Iowa and the surrounding states. New prisons are being added to our roster all the time. We are a not-for-profit organization serving Iowa and the surrounding states.
What We Do
What we do is gather used paperback books at friends of library sales, flea markets, and yard sales, or through private donations. We are looking for books in good condition. Meaning they have front and back covers, all the pages intact, and preferably without a lot of writing or underlining on the pages.
On this site, you will find information about our organization and how you can get involved. We are not yet set up for tax exempt donations under the 501(c)(3) tax code, but we are working towards it.
How We Do It
Donated books are picked up or can be dropped off. Books are then inspected and sorted into cases with an equal balance of genre and subject matter and stored and scheduled until the assigned delivery time.
Why We Do It
We feel that books should be available to everyone who has the desire to read and learn. By relating to characters in fiction books, inmates can use that as a starting-point to explore some of the things that are happening inside their own minds. By reading self-improvement books, inmates are able to add to their knowledge and skill set which may be beneficial once they are released.
Donating clean, quality, appropriate material to
those incarcerated with a desire to read.
